I have no experience with any Mac hardware, but Virtualbox has improved a lot during the years. It won't have accelerated graphics, but still fast and responsive.

I don't know how things function in the US, but here in Europe it's already pretty much a standard that average joes has totally the opposite opinion what media claims to be the result.

Before opening that book, finishing vim-tutor will get anybody started.
