I don't recognize them, who are the silhouettes?

To keep his sanity, Joel crafts sentient robot companions, including Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot, and Gypsy, to keep him company and help him humorously comment on each movie as it plays, a process known as riffing. Each two-hour episode would feature a single movie (often edited for time constraints), sometimes preceded by various old shorts and educational films, with Joel, Tom, and Crow watching in silhouette from a row of theater seats at the bottom of the screen.

with Joel, Tom, and Crow

Or Mike, Tom and Crow.

Or Jonah, Tom and Crow.

Or Emily, Tom and Crow.

Or Eddie, Tom and Crow.

Or sometimes various Mads.

And once Gypsy, and sometimes GPC and sometimes GPC2.

It's a show called Mystery Science Theater 3000. It's about someone stuck in space by evil scientists and forced to watch bad movies with his robot companions (played by puppets). The show is made up mostly of them watching the movie with only their silhouettes in the bottom of the screen as they make fun of the movie, like in the comic, with occasional segments where they leave the theater and usually do some kind of skit related to the film.

It's kinda corny but it's a fun show. They have a channel on YouTube where they upload some of the episodes and play others live, and an app where you can watch most of them ad-free.

They're not that bad, often just dated.

[–] Semjaza@lemmynsfw.com 11 points 1 week ago

Yes but also most of those films were bad at the time too.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Not the most recent season. Unless you consider 2022 dated.

The mads are back at dumb industries and rifftrax are the more modern versions of the gem of a show!

Getting roasted by the mst3k cast? That would be fantastic.

[–] MajorHavoc@programming.dev 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah. I'm revising my funeral plans now...

If I can get one of those touching slideshows, but with three good friends MST3K-ing the whole thing, I'll consider my life well lived.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

With my luck, they'd treat me like they did Rick Sloane or Joe Don Baker.

[–] chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world 34 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I don't know. I'm kinda here for it. I've done enough dumb shit in my life that it should make for a decent episode.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Would it change your mind if you found out that it was also directed by Coleman Francis?

[–] chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

I mean, that's just on brand...

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah but what if its not an episode? What if its a 39 year experience?

[–] chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Then there is gonna be a lot of sad masturbation.

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Yeah but its definitely worthy of the title of hell if I have to sit and watch anything for 39 years, with or without commentary.

You're not planning to wank to your childhood self, are you?

[–] chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think you misunderstand which side of the screen will have the masturbation.

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Thank you for clarification

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

There's gonna be a lot of you being mocked by puppets while watching the sad masturbation all over again.

I’m not here for it haha.

“Ok, so he seen the girl making out with the inbred dude who screwed his cousin and then he immediately went home and “talked to the dead” through poker cards to see if there was any chance she’d still marry him some day? Bahahahahaa. He’s only 12? Oh my god, where else can this go?”

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I’m intrigued and mortified at the idea.

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 2 points 1 week ago

I feel like I could probably join in on the roast and have fun.

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

And I thought Birdemic was bad

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

Oh man......my episode would be depressing.......

[–] pirating@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

If you want more recent MST3K style riffing, the Mads are Back at dumb industries, and Rifftrax are great!!

[–] randomdeadguy@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (3 children)

May I have mine directed by Roger Corman? It would have only one location and consist mostly of padding.

[–] TSG_Asmodeus@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

The same hallway for 75% of the shots.

[–] Shard@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Best I can do is Robert B.Weide...

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

And have a good chance of Dick Miller making an appearance at some point.

Everyone likes Dick Miller!

This is basically what a DMT trip can be like I've heard. With infinite forgetting and noticing the being viewed conceit again.

[–] SynopsisTantilize@lemm.ee 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] Semjaza@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'll give you the story as I can recall it...

The trip was reliving the person's life from top to bottom, and at various points hearing huge applause or boos or an emotional rection of some kind, and turning round and seeing that they were on the set of "This Was Your Life" with a huge studio audience. The presenter would give a prize, joke or something and ask some questions which led back to reliving their life and soon forget about the "show" until the next time the crowd went wild. It is said it felt like a lifetime, I don't know how long the trip lasted in measured time.

[–] SynopsisTantilize@lemm.ee 3 points 1 week ago

That's nuts. I wonder if that's your subconscious acknowledging the conscious. Or your meat hardware looking inward at the ghost software or something.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Okay, this is going to make me get a lot of DMT if I know I'm dying.
